Final Video

Changes

  • Video
We reshot the video so that we could see the video in a better quality as the quality of the video before was very poor. We later realized that this was due to the way in which we had imported it. To make this better we reimported the video directly on to the computer rather than from a USB.

  • Lighting
The lighting in our video before was quite poor, to maximize lighting I suggested we use an Over Head Projector as the lamps are very bright. This enhanced the quality of our video as well as make it much better to work with.

  • Band
Due to issues within the original band, we had to change them as it was proving very difficult to get times and dates of when they could meet up together, leaving us little time to work. However the lead singer "Jasmin" we kept the same otherwise it would of been too much work for us to change everything, including the Digipaks and advert.

Video Feedback

We showed the first draft of the video to the rest of our class to get feedback about what could be improved. These were the criticisms:
  • The ipod at the beginning; the seconds is 14 seconds into the song and the '_01_' is distracting.
  • The last verse with the '10p machine' is too calm compared to the fast pace of music; either replace or get rid of.

  • There's a verse where she is in pink and the lip-synching is slightly off, also this shot is too long as the viewer would get board or distracted quite easily.

Changes based on Feedback

Magazine Advert Feedback

We presented our digipaks and magazine adverts to the class from which we were able to get some constructive criticism to better our project, these are as follows:

Digipak Back Cover
  • The spine needs to be fixed for example the font, size and should be facing inwards
  • Extra digipak features should be included on the back cover
  • The artist name and title looks fake and stuck on and should be blended in more
  • Barcode should be in the corner
Digipak Inside Panel 2

  • The band image needs to be changed as the band has now changed
Magazine Advert

  • Get rid of the random white dangling from arm
  • Change font on the bottom to Arial ( so that it is Simple)
  • Make date smaller
  • Don't put a pink outline on date
  • Make the artists stand out more

Magazine Advert Draft

This is our draft advert, we have put the same image and title of the album on the front this is because if people see the advert then they will be able to recognize the advert on the digipak, in turn making the end user buy the product.

according to our feedback, we need to make the image much bigger to fill the spaces as it look quite plain. We also need to include some small texts of websites and possible concert dates etc to make it much more believable.

Magazine Advert

Here is our draft magazine advert, we have used a corroded effect on the back so that it gives it the rocky feel. the blue and pink is a contrast and makes it feminine whilst linking with the artists outfit. the " album out now' stands out as this is supposed to be the advert not the cover therefore we kept the writing to a limit.

Instead of the 'out now' being directly underneath the album name we have put it at the bottom and made it bigger so that it draw attention to the viewer when they turn the page. This in turn will show them that there is a new album out....
Personally i think that the pink is too bright and pop rather than rock, however we could always change this in the final advert.

FINISHED DIGIPAK

This is our final digi pak ! Here is the front, back, and inside.

FINISHED- back cover

This is the finished back cover, there are some added features, one of which is the details about the record company on the bottom. We have added the same style album title as the front as we wanted that to be the main focus, the font for the track listings is the same as the album name as we thought it was very edgy yet simple. we thought that the simpler we kept the fonts the better it would be.

Underneath the track listings, we have included all of the producers and mixers, as this is what is included on most of our research such as the back of Avril Lavignes album they too have put the producers of the album. We have also included a few websites that we think will be good for the 'fans' of the album to go on.

Back Cover

This is the original image we decided that would go on the back of the album cover, we chose this as we thought that her facial expressions and her posture was good. We Feel that her expression and mood has a lot of attitude in it and therefore also goes with the genre of our music.

This is what we have done to the back so far, we have added a black strip down the side so that it looks like the spine of the cover. On there is the artists, name, album name and the record company name. again as for the front, we have enhanced the image to make it look sharp and blended it so that it has a softer feel on the edges. we have also darkened her hair to go with our genre. We have centre aligned the song names and added the minutes next to them. This is because we think that the shape look much better and adds shape to the back. In the bottom right hand corner we have added a barcode, as when we did our research we saw that most digipak covers have a barcode on them.

Again the same colours and fonts that are on the front are on the back as we didn't want to over complicate things and use too many effects and fonts otherwise it would look messy and dis-organized.

There is still the swirls to add which will be grouped and then copied on to the back as it would make it look identical to the title on the front.

The Back of this album is very simple, the ringed writing is extremely small, however once enlarged  we can see that it is all about copy right protection against the album, artist and the record company. The last two icons where placed there by myself to see what it would look like. However we didn't put these on ours as we couldn't place them correctly. Like the back of this cover everything on ours link for example the colours all tie in together.

Front Cover

This is the front cover for our Digi pak... we began with some earthy colours, which we thought would look good with the tone of her hair.... We then played around with some fonts, and placed them in certain positions we thought would look appropriate....

After a discussion, we thought that it might be better to try a black and white background as it will make our artist stand out more. We have Made a few added changes for example darkening her hair,  also sharpening up her picture and getting rid of any blemishes to her skin. To make the album name stand out more we made the colour of her name completely different to that of the the album name. This is because the name is what gets recognized first, After which we added some stars and swirls around it to finish the name off and make it look pretty yet edgy....

Judging by what we can see, we feel that the first image is very plain and not eye catching enough and the second one is much more of how we wanted our album cover to look...
Here we have compared our Album cover to those of kelly Clarkson so show possible similarities and differences ....

Super Girl 1 - Word

More Digi-Paks

The background is all the same shade of blue and the band name is written in a simple font. A reason for this could be because the band could already have albums out therefore people would already know their music. The members of the band looked non-posed and very casual. This could show the bands simplicity. We can see from the front and back of the cover that only half the picture is on the front and the rest of the missing picture has been put on the back. This could represent the the creativity behind the band and the artists imagery.

a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"

This is the booklet which is attached to the inside front cover of the pack. This makes the Digi-pak much better to look at and enhances the fact that this genre of music and digi-pak is for people who are possibly of the more mature generation.

By adding in a booklet like this would widen the knowledge of the audience of the band after they have brought the product.
This is the booklet that is on the inside of the digi-pak. it is the only thing in the whole pack that is in colour. This is because audiences enjoy looking at things in colour, as this is more appealing to the eyes. It reveals to us what the artists really look like and shows us the expression on their faces. From this image we can see that their expressions are very serious yet innocent looking. Once again this could portray that they are serious about their music.
This is the inside of the Digi-pak, this is the only plastic thing in the pak. This is clearly where the CD is supposed to go.
Again the spin of the Digi-pak is in the same font as the front and back covers. Also the writing is the same colours and the background is black.
This is the Back of the digi pack, like the front it is very simple, the three ladies we saw on the front of the cover are yet again on the back along with an added man. Still the writing on the cover is very simple and the same colours have been used throughout. Like the front this conveys that it is for people who are serious about music. The name of the album have been repeated on the front.

Whilst holding the cover, we noticed that the cover was like a book as it had paper glued to the cardboard front and back. The finish on the cover was matt, yet again this shows the simplicity of the digi-pak.

Digi-paks 30th Sept 2009

This is an example of a digipak. From the cover we can see that this genre of music could possibly be aimed at a target audience that is very serious and passionate about music.  Another way we can tell this is by the colours, there is only, black, white and green and very little detail. The look on the artists faces look serious therefore showing that not only is their music aimed at passionate people, but they too as the artists are serious about what they do.

21st September - Artist Image, Genre, Target Audience

  • On her wrist we asked her to wear a bracelet, this is because whilst researching we noticed that most of our artists where wearing bracelets.
  • The black top and skirt emphasis the rock look.
  • The skirt has the rock chick Kelly Clarkson style to it, this too was included in our research.
  • We asked her to wear blue tights as we wanted to add in a little splash of colour and not just all one colour.
  • The leather boots show she is confident due to the size of the heel shows her to be stylish.

Artist Imageeee

  • Artist Image
We have created a mood board of lots of different ideas of costume, make-up, hair and accessories that we would like our artist to wear. We did this so that it would be easier for us to put together all of our ideas as a group and then later narrow down the best ones. We figured that by doing this, it will help us work much better in a group as everyone is able to get across their thoughts and opinions.
  • Genre
Whilst listening to the song we noticed how the genre of the music was pop rock. we also noticed how the song was sung by a rock-'chick'. This is the image we as a group would like our artist to have. We researched other pop rock genres such as Avril Lavine and such other artists like Joss Stone. As a group we decided that this genre would be better as we thought that it would be easy for us to do. We could also put together our skills and make quite a creative video.

  • Target Audience
We have decided that our target audience is going to be to teenage girls who are around the age of 17 to 19. this is because the song is about teen love and this would appeal more to this age group.

Pitching 14th & 16th Sept

Supergirl Pitch-1

We created a Pitch idea to the rest of the class... discussing and justifying what we hope to do and deliver in our video...
We also explained why we wanted to use this idea and how we could put our ideas and skills together to get the best possible grade.

Video examples...

Avril Lavigne

This video is very pop rock which is the same genre for our groups music. It illustrates how we would like our artist to portray her image. We chose this video due to the fact that it is quite close to the boy/ girl story line going on in our song.

Black or White by Michael Jackson, Music Video and Lyrics

Black or White was the first single taken from Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album, released in November 1991.The single is considered the biggest selling rock song of the 1990s.

Written, composed, and arranged by Jackson with the rap lyrics by Bill Bottrell, it is a song that promotes racial unity. The song’s introduction and main riff, reminiscent of that of “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp are performed by guitarist Slash and Bill Bottrell.

The video features along with Jackson, Macaulay Culkin, Tess Harper, and George Wendt. It helped usher in morphing as a new technology in music videos, pioneered by Godley & Creme’s “Cry” video in 1985. The video was directed by John Landis, who also directed Thriller.

A young Tyra Banks, just beginning her career as a supermodel, is seen dancing to the song in the ending of the video, as well as actress Peggy Lipton.

Songs To Thing about...

  • Easy For You
This was a slow R'n'B Song which would be easy to do a video as there is a story line behind the lyrics.

  • Hangin' With My Crew
This could be another easy one to do as it is a pop song and we could get a group of boys to be in the video. Also there are lots of videos we could have a look at and see how the camera work has been used to sell the song.

Write up of Videos watched in Class

We viewed a number of videos in class to get a better understanding of why artists choose to do certain things and whether or not the song connects with what we as an audience visualize on screen.
  • 'It's Raining Men' - Cover By Geri Haliwell (Original - By The Weather Girls)
  • What are your first impressions of the video?
The first impression we get of the video is it is a pop song. This is due to the fact that the song itself is very upbeat and something that would influence females to view it as it is about men.

  • What is the camera work like?
The camera transitions are very quick and jumpy, to go along with the energetic pace of the song. We see many jump cuts from Geri Haliwell dancing in a collage to her showing her athletic side and kick boxing.

  • What impressions do we get of the Artist?
Due to the fact that Geri is dancing at a very fast pace we get the impression that she is full of energy and she is very active. we also notice how when she is dancing there are lots of young males staring at her as she is wearing very tight clothes and her tummy is showing. (voyerism) This can also be classed as her being slightly promiscuous as she kisses the judge at her audition. However on the other hand the energy in her video shows that she just wants to have fun therefore it brings out her personality.

  • What Music conventions are displayed?
We see that they have used lots of water in the video to compliment the song as it is about 'raining' men. We also notice how the lyrics match the visuals.

  • 'Golden Retriever' - By Super Furry Animals
  • What are your first impressions of the artist?
As soon as the music begins we notice that it is a rock video, this is due to the electric guitars and the loud music.

  • What is the Camera Work like?
Again like the previous video the camera shots goes along to the pace of the music. There are many close ups if the band and the whole video takes place in a cardboard box.

  • What Impressions do we get of the Artist?
The only thing we notice is that they have a strange sense of humour as we don't quite understand the reason why they have chosen to do the video in a cardboard box or why they are referring to a female as a golden retriever.

  • What Music Conventions are displayed?
The video does have dogs in it therefore relating to the title of the song as do the band turn in to 'Golden Retrievers'. In this video the dog is the voyeuristic focus for the audience as that is the main feature. However yet again the music compliments the visuals.

  • 'Material Girl' - Madonna
  • What are your first Impressions of the Video?
We first notice that the video is set out to be an old film strip. We also noticed that is also very cleverly mirroring the video by 'Marilyn Monroe'

  • What is the Camera work like?
There aren't as many close ups although some. There are more tracking shots of Madonna parading around the stage set ( which is set up in a theatrical manor)

  • What impressions do we get of the Artist?
We can see that she like Geri, is using her body as a way of being very promiscuous and flirtations this is because her song is about being materialistic. We also notice how she is very in control of the situation even though she is surrounded by lots of men.

  • What Music Conventions are Displayed?
The video is set out on a stage. However in the beginning of the video there is a clip of Madonna in he dressing room on the phone saying to someone 'he thinks he can buy me Diamonds' again this shows her being in control.

A2 Coursework Brief

For our a2 Coursework we have been asked to create two of three things for a promotional music video. The options we have chosen are:
  • A cover for the videos release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD Package)
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD Package)
by doing these two thing we will hopefully be able to gain a better insight on how music videos are created and what skills are needed to make the video as well as the artist image sell the product for our target markets.

Learning Outcome 15/06/09

Learning Outcomes:
1) Develop understanding of the conventions of music videos.
2) understand the socio-historical context of music videos in 1970's and 1980's.

Lesson:
Today we watched 7 videos from the late 70's and early 80's. overtime we are able to see how much the technology has changed and how often it is being used. In all of the videos we notcie that all of the artists are being shown singing. The use of technology has changed overtime, as in 1986 there where lots of animations and cuts being used. this could be due to the fact that technology was new. Coming down to the 90's we notice that artists have used more tchnology but more descreatly.
